Artist Statement

Normally I plan my work on a drafting table, drawing flattened or elongated circular forms created from composite arcs. I layer these, building more complex compositions that evolve over the page or surfaces of a space.

I am interested in universal concepts, flow and fissure, repetition and meditative process. I work in series and frequently revisit works or ideas

When I was much younger, I liked to draw and paint figure. I became interested in linework transcribing reduced form as outlines. For a while I started painting these outlines with liquid clay or slip. I often reference this in my later wall drawings using the prefix slip in many of my titles. Process is more interesting than the result, painting out my drawings at the end of a show is often a cathartic conclusion.

My Sliptectonic drawings are like islands tearing under tension I revisit this series of works frequently sometimes using this body of work to explore different themes.

Slip-Callosotomies examines the left and right side of the brain following a seizure I experienced in 2014. These works are drawn in mirrored pairs that are slightly asymmetric.

More recently I am interested in how others can share in the creative process by making the drawing process very simple and repeatable. Presenting creative choices that determine the final form of the work is interesting to explore. This helps me connect with others in the making of art.
